new developments tonight as the forest fire near yosemite prompts evacuations. >> it looks like a massive cloud, but it is actually a cloud of smoke, thousands of miles just west of yosemite national park. we get the latest from ken wayne. he's been on the frontlines for two days now, and joins us from

the command center along highway 120, which is still closed tonight between groveland and yosemite. >> reporter: there are now 1,080 firefighters from as far away as san diego and bend, oregon, working this fire. the day side crews are getting a meal. night side crews are out there on the fire lines, hoping to contain this fire, which is now just 5% contained. meantime, about 8 miles away, an advisory evacuation is underway in pine mountain lake. sheriffs deputies are going door-to-door, telling residents they should leave their homes, because the fire is getting dangerously close. deputies get their name so they'll know who to look for if the fire moves in. the fire's movement today proved to be very unpredictable. there were some tense moments at the fire command post, as heavy black smoke began billowing from the forest at the camp's edge. soon large flames appeared, and

it became clear the fire was heading straight for the camp, housing dozens of support vehicles and personnel. >> we're here. we have a lot of people, and we're just trying to put the best plan forward. >> but it's a dicey situation right now. >> yep, fire is dynamic. >> reporter: they grabbed blue packs containing portable fire shelters. the good news, backfires and fire breaks kept the flames at bay. >> we had engines out there. they were firing that road to take a lot of fuel out. we want to show you just how close the flames came to the command post. you can see it behind me, with all the vehicles and personnel. this is cherry lake road. it became a fire break, because the flames came up to the edge

of the road. the fire has destroyed 9 buildings, including two homes, and threatened 2500 other homes. it's also slowly moving toward yosemite national park. 10 air miles away. >> we are concerned. however, it's not a threat at this time. >> because it's quite some distance still to get there. >> it is a distance. the fire is a distance from yosemite national park. >> reporter: highway 120 leading into yosemite remains closed, although the park is open. other roads in this area are also shut down. in fact, the road leading to this camp has been closed much of the night, due to burning fire on the roadway, and downed power lines. live at the fire command center, ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. in that red flag warning that we had had in the bay area, it was up in the lake tahoe area, it has been dropped.

lightning strikes, or thunderstorms developing right here along the west slope. what's interesting is they wrap around. here's the last six hours. red is the red flag warning. the lightning strikes coming up over the top, going out here. look, they work their way offshore. this area of cloudiness, and convectivety, if that would have been farther south, it would have been an issue, so this is looping around. red flag areas remain in the north. we're going to talk about the hot spots and the five-day forecast. because of the danger posed by the rim fire, officials evacuated at least three summer camps just outside yosemite. noel walker is live in berkely to tell us about a high school retreat that went up in smoke. >> reporter: maydak high school is a long way away, but its

student and staff were beginning a retreat. students leave with a collection of happy snaps for photo albums. this year, they just had to leave. >> once we were in the cars and driving away, we saw a lot of flames in the distance. some of them were fairly clear. >> reporter: the rim fire took an unexpected turn monday. two hours after 90 students plus staff from the small berkely high school arrived at their campsite. the sheriff orders them to evacuate. >> the wind came racing up. it felt like we got out of there just in time. >> reporter: the school director snapped these images with their phone, as they gathered students, and loaded them into any vehicles they could find, and took off in a smoky haze. they had 15 minutes to evacuate, leaving most everything behind. >> we didn't actually manage to take anything. anyone who had medications could take that. the rest of us just went into

cars. >> reporter: 40 of them piled into the back of the heavy equipment truck to evacuate, and wait for the bus back to berkely, which didn't arrive until 2:00 a.m. tonight, we learned the flames damaged several tents at the campsite. >> things don't always turn out as planned. >> reporter: the photo albums will look very different from years past, but the end goals are still the same. >> yep, brought everybody together, so a lot of the team building activities that we normally do, we don't have to do, because they're done. >> reporter: that school retreat will pick up where it left off, but here on campus, tomorrow. reporting live in berkely, noel walker, ktvu, channel 2 news. more details now, camp mather is now fully evacuated. the handful of people who

remained behind left today. the berkely camp is also empty. its staff members left on a bus last night. bay area fire crews are among those fighting the rim fire. the governor's office of emergency services says help is coming from all over the state. >> we're probably over 100 different allied agencies up here on this fire with, i think we're around 35 strike teams. so it's a good cross section of california up here for sure. >> meantime, the u.s. forest service says it is burning through money. right now, the agency is dealing with 51 large uncontained fires around the country and says its fire fighting budget is almost gone as a result. it is down to just $50 million left. regional offices are asked to reduce spending. the forest service also had its budget cut by 5% because of sequestration. continues coverage at 10:30 tonight, the costly changes as the rim fire poses a threat to

power lines and a significant source of bay area drinking water. oakland police say they're investigating another burglary by men posing as utility workers. it happened on sunny hills road near the oakland piedmont city line. two men told the elderly residents they worked for pg and e, and asked for access to their property. >> while the homeowners were in their backyard, with at least one, if not both of the suspects, someone went into their home and took their belongings. >> reporter: two weeks ago, a home in vallejo was also burglarized by two men posing as pg and e workers. in this latest case, the burglars got away with jewelry and cash. the move comes partly in response to a decision by the accrediting commission for community and junior college, to evoke the accreditation of

city college next year. the audit is expected to take 7 months. new information tonight about the man killed in a triple shooting at a san jose bar and restaurant. police have now identified him as 36-year-old chin win. he and two other people were shot just after 10:00 monday night. the other men are expected to survive. friends say win was a dedicated family man who worked in the computer field. san jose police say they think that this shooting was a random one. at this point, they have not identified any suspects. a former member of the vagos motorcycle gang has been sentenced to up to seven years in prison for his role in the murder of a hells angel rival. the shooting happened at the nugget. he pleaded guilty to second degree murder as part of a plea deal. the shooting victim, jeffrey

pettigrew was a member of the hells angels. an internet gaming cafe in concord is under new pressure tonight to move. neighbors concerns last month. they said the business attracted drugs and crime. only on ktvu, eric rasmussen follows up with who else wants that operation shut down. >> reporter: managers of the hills internet cafe in concord say they're doing nothing illegal, but today they didn't want us to see it. they asked us to leave and then covered up the window. >> call the police, and i'll ask them. >> reporter: the police never came. now we've learned the owner of this strip mall wants the business out. ktvu first reported the city sent a cease and desist order three months ago. >> no one wants them here. period. nobody wants them here. >> reporter: managers say customers are playing legal sweepstakes. not gambling, but in neighborhood didn't want to show his face, says the business has attracted other

problems. >> there's a lost drug dealers, and a lot of people that are doing bad things in our parking lot. >> reporter: we found evidence of what neighbors are talking about. we spotted this tiny zip lock baby with blue devils on it. law enforcement sources tell us that could indicate methamphetamine. they originally approved a business license for the place. >> the description of the business was office supplies, fax, copies, internet, wi-fi. there was no description of internet gaming. >> reporter: the attorney for the business, harlon goodson is the director of california gambling control. his next step could be taking his client to court. in concord, eric rasmussen ktvu, channel 2 news. san jose police are asking

making the bad decision to use drugs, we will do it. we might see him two days in a row. we might not see him for a month. >> whatever they need to do to keep the campus safe. >> reporter: the school says it has no plans for the dogs to sniff students specifically, instead, primarily focusing on lockers and cars in the parking lot. with the exception of a few negative comments, parents have overwhelmingly been supportive. maureen naylor, ktvu, channel 2 news. a school bookkeeper is a hero after she calmly defused what could have deny a tragic situation. she talked a gunman into surrendering, after he walked into a school in georgia. >> i told him, don't be alarmed, but just lay down so i can sit right here, so they can see that i'm okay, and you didn't harm me. >> reporter: the cops said michael brandon hill told her

he was ready to die, and he was well armed, but she was able to convince him to live, and no one was injured. afterwards, she said she had never been so frightened in her life. antioch man are searching for a man and his dog. 18-year-old johnny madden stabbed his 16-year-old girlfriend in the leg and stomach, and then went after the family's dog, a 6-month-old shepherd puppy. police say the girl, her unborn child and the puppy survived the attack, but madden got away, and is still on the loose. the trial began today for a concord man chargewide involuntary manslaughter in the death of his son. prosecutors say steven knew he's dogs were vicious, didn't lock the garage they were in, and left jacob unsupervised. he waived his right to a jury

trial. he faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. if you live in the east bay, don't be alarmed if you receive an emergency alert on your cell phone tomorrow night. the tests come in the wake of a problem with the system last month, when alerts were sent to people who didn't even live in an alamo. tonight, work crews are putting the finishing touches on the new eastern span of the bay bridge, as crews get ready to close the entire span one week from now. christian cassen gives us a virtual preview of what to expect once it reopens. >> reporter: caltrans today released this animation of what driving on the new bridge will look like. moving onto the decks, supported by the iconic self- anchored suspension tower. >> you are going to see the towers and the cables immediately.

and you'll get to see great views of the east bay. but we do ask that drivers leave the gawking to their passengers. >> reporter: today, the california highway patrol revealed their plan to stop traffic wednesday evening, 8:00 p.m. >> we know the closures are going to be done. we're going to do rolling traffic breaks. >> reporter: police from san francisco and oakland will be on either end of the bridge to alert drivers to stay away from the bridge during the closure. chp says in previous bridge closures, there were drivers caught unaware. >> they rolled up to our closures, and say is the bridge closed? when the sign that says the bridge is closed, the news media has said the bridge is closed. the freeway information signs have said the bridge is closed. >> i didn't hear about the bridge closure until you just told me about it now. >> reporter: caltrans still needs to work to get the word out to drivers. >> it seems like there would be plenty of time to warn people. it's a pretty big deal. >> reporter: when the bridge

a military judge sentenced private bradley manning to prison for handing over military secrets to wikileaks. the judge split what the prosecutors asked for, 60 years, and what the defense asked for, 20 years. it's the longest sentence ever received for leaks to the media. here in the bay area,

bradley manning has an army of supporters. some of them gathered in san francisco tonight. one man wrote a song for manning, calling him a hero. supporters of manning say he shouldn't spent decades behind bars, and they're calling on president obama to act. >> on behalf of the san francisco chapter of veterans for peace, we reach out to our commander in chief and say bradley manning deserves a full pardon, mr. president. >> another supporter said he was gathering petitions to present to the president. the white house says any requests will be given due consideration like any other. new recommendations about the nsa greaterring communications between americans unlawfully for years. the national security agency collected an estimated 56,000 emails and other electronic communications each year that

were entirely domestic. the judge suggestioned the nsa violated the law against spying on americans. the nsa said the data collection was unable to separate information that only involved americans. video from rebel organizations showed dozens of people sick and suffering and they do not show any obvious signs of wounds. the rebels say at least 100 people died, many of them women and children. if the use of chemical weapons is confirmed it would add pressure on the united states to get more involved in the conflict. japan is facing a new disaster at the fukushima nuclear plant. about 80,000 gallons of highly radioactive water has leaked from a holding tank, and may have reached the ocean. the fukushima plant was badly damaged in that tsunami in 2011. three reactors had meltdowns. a german woman, who was

new video now. hayward firefighters responded to a call of smoke around 11:30 tonight, and found pot plants. the battalion chief tells us, every room of the house had plants in varying stages of growth. he estimated more than 200 plants. the house of the located in the 2300 block of lori drove. the alameda county sheriff's department is now investigating. it's not just hitting the

books they need to worry about. new at 10:00, crime concerns have prompted the university to expand safety measures. >> reporter: police tell us criminals are targeting students at all hours of the day. campus police tell me they're relaunching their partnership with berkely police and stepping up patrols in hot spots. they say thieves are targeting distracted students. often those wearing ear phones. >> this is what my friend told me. a group of three guys were working toward them in broad daylight near our dining halls and just mugged her. >> reporter: police say last year more than 100 laptops were stolen on campus. another student tells me she was walking on busy alcatraz street on friday, about two and a half miles from campus when she was robbed at 7:00 a.m.

she spoke to us by phone from los angeles tonight. >> i'm really angry, and frustrated. i don't like feeling like a victim. i think that's it's upsetting, i do know so many people that have been mugged too. >> reporter: from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., it will offer door-to-door service. >> more convenience that it runs later at night for students that do need it. >> reporter: the school will also extend what's called the bear wall service from dusk until 4:00 a.m. a trained worker will walk students to their destination. all a student has to do is call from a campus phone, or their cell phone to ask for an excourt. >> take your precautions and just try to stay alert. >> reporter: the student who was robbed recently tells me she now feels apprehensive.

she says onlookers can help just by yelling out. it may scare the criminals. oakland police have some safety recommendations as kids get ready to return to school on monday. on their way to school, students should have safe houses where they can ask for help, if necessary. they should also avoid vacant lots and alleyways. and police say children should report bullying, whether they're a victim, or a witness. the most common violations that inspectors are finding. menlo park police are letting the public know about a useful tool they used to track a camera thief. that tool is called stolen camera finder.com. a resident had entered the serial number of his camera into the free site. after the camera was stolen, police were able to find photos posted online with that same

camera, and they ended up locating the camera in des moines, iowa. the online vender who sold it is now under investigation. if you'd like to know how to register your camera, just go to our website, ktvu.com, and click on web links. yahoo's ceo is sparking conversation with a new spread in vogue magazine. some have criticized it, saying it sends the wrong message of a ceo. and some feminists criticize it, because they say it perpetuates females as objects. but others say it shows women can be in charge and beautiful at the same time. meantime, yahoo topped google last month in terms of internet traffic. a monthly report shows that yahoo sites had 196 million visiters in july, compared to google's 192 million.

analysts attribute it to the acquisitions of more than a dozen startups, including tumblr. problems far from the fire line. ktvu's david stevenson explains how the fire has now affected water and power supplies in san francisco. >> reporter: san francisco's clay underground studio counts on a steady flow of water. >> the very important. clay needs water to be able to throw and be able to handle. >> reporter: keeping the water clean and flowing is a concern for san francisco public utility officials. tonight, they're monitoring the rim fire. worried about its impact on the power and water supply. the system provides water to 2.6 million bay area residents. most of the pipelines are underground. a big concern is ash floating into the reservoir. >> we have to filter plants.

we'll have to filter our water. >> reporter: the buildings weren't in the fire's path, but the power lines were. soot on the lines could cause arcing. amid a temporary loss of 110 megawatts, energy used to power buses, city hall, streetlamps and the airport. the city is paying pg and e $25,000 a day to help make up the difference. >> currently, we're visually inspecting the lines. hopefully, we can bring them back to service soon. >> reporter: san francisco utilities are monitoring the fire's path. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu, channel 2 news. in the continued effort to combat the spread of west nile virus, vector control is

planning to fog parts of milpedes. the fogging is set to start tonight at 11:00. this is the second time that crew has been out fogging that area. tomorrow night vector control crews in contra costa county will be out spraying for mosquitoes. east to west between sellers avenue and brentwood boulevard. neighbors evacuated. a home destroyed by fire, and a bay area family left homeless. the small mistake that caused these big problems. >> then, how safe is that bus your child rides on? we went along an inspection, and

a small mistake causes huge problems. take a look at what happened when the driver hit the gas instead of the brake. she hit a gas meter that started a fire. patty lee tells us, a good samaritan rescued the driver. >> reporter: a fiery explosion badly damaged this oakland home, after an 89-year-old woman hit the accelerator instead of the brake at this stop sign. by the time crews arrived, the house and car were ablaze. the driver was safely out of the car, pulled out by a good samaritan. >> went inside, pulled this lady out, and essentially saved her life. if she had not done that, this would probably be a whole different situation.

>> reporter: the situation forced neighbors to evacuate the area. >> i was scared. my first reaction was to get everybody out of the house. >> reporter: crews kept the distance from the house. pg and e tried to shut off the gas. because the 89-year-old driver drove over the residential line and snapped it off, pg and e crews needed to dig to find the line to shut off the gas. the problem was compounded by the car, which was stuck on top of the active gas line. >> a lot of memories gone. just bought a drum set for my daughter. that's now gone. >> reporter: john says it's a miracle no one was home. he and his wife have five young children, including a newborn. >> we won today. despite the loss, we won. that's the most important thing. >> reporter: the family can't go home tonight, and not for a while. but at least they have each

other. in oakland, patty lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. a former baggage handler at sfo convicted of stealing from travelers luggage has been ordered to pay restitution. he has been ordered to pay 21 victims a total of more than $32,000 in restitution. he was a baggage handler for united airlines. he was caught in may, stealing ipads, purses, and other items. he is currently serving a 6 month sentence. in five minutes, a call for a initialwide fast food strike. first, -- >> bill martin is back in five mi

new video tonight from san jose, where a family returned home, and made a disturbing discovery. they went into their home about 9:00 tonight, and found knives had been strewn all over their house, including on their daughter's bed. police responded in force and officers found a suspect and arrested him. he appeared to be under the influence. highway patrol officers are making sure school buses are safer to ride in. rob ross shows us the most common violations that chp inspectors are finding. >> more than a million california students get to class just like this, by school bus. their responsibility to make sure the buses are safe, rests

with the highway control division. while san mateo county students return to class this week. mike has been busy. >> you can hit the horn for me? >> reporter: inspecting the region's hundreds of school buses. inside, outside, and underneath. >> i'm looking for loose steering components. >> reporter: the california highway patrol inspects each school bus every 13 months. >> as far as finding just outrageous violations on them, in my six years of doing this, no, i've never found just totally gross, neglect violation. >> i think the school buses are the safest vehicles on the road today. they're the most highly regulated vehicles. >> reporter: the highway patrol is only part of the safety. the other key is the driver. each driver under law must check the bus and report any problems. driving a bus load of school

kids is challenging enough without having to worry about mechanical problems. >> making sure the students stay in their seats. keep a decent level of noise that they stay out of the aisles. they keep their hands to themselves, all while being able to drive safely. >> reporter: rob roth, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more details now. among the common violations in the bay area, 232 for lights, such as burned out bulbs. 152 buses for brake problems. 98 involving steering and suspension. in all, 106 bay area school buses were taken out of service last year. the call is out for a nationwide strike of fast food outlets a week from tomorrow. a collation of labor and religious groups is working to push the minimum wage for fast food workers to at least $15 an hour. they say workers are poorly paid, while multinational

corporations are making big profits. many restaurant operators say higher wages could put them out of business. the fog at the coast and a few high clouds overhead. you can see the tropical moisture looping around the top, then moving offshore. convective activity. we'll come out here. you can see it. the thunderstorms start to light up in this area. that's a very impressive area of activity, as it moves overshore. look at it light up in the last hour or so. you see the red flag warnings are still in effect. we are basically getting out of that environmentk and getting into a more stable weather environment, which means no forecast with the thunderstorm. red flag warnings go away, and temperatures sort of stabilize. tomorrow is a lot like today without the thunderstorm chances. fog in the morning, and temperatures on the mild side tomorrow. we had lots of 80s today. tomorrow, we're going to have lots of 70s, low 80s something

like that. the coverage, is significant. you notice there's no high clouds. the reds are 90s. look how far inland they are. the yellows are 70s, pushing all the way, upper 70s into santa rosa. sacramento, in the oranges. in parts of west sacramento. that's 80s as well. a cool forecast, because that low pressure kicks onshore, it's going to keep temperatures on the cool side. it stretches out the inversion. we'll fire off more thunderstorms tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, as this thing moves tracks to the northeast. it keeps us this in cooling trend pattern until it moves out of here. it's been a busy week in back to school. you're going too. just to get them out the door. 61degrees at 8:00 a.m. maybe a little cooler.

cal tech was the other california school on the list. it ranked 6th. wrestlemania could soon be coming to santa clara. it was a finalist to host the event in the spring of 2015. santa clara's mayor is flying to the east coast with 49er executives to help pitch the new stadium for wrestlemania 2015. philadelphia is the other city competing for the gig. a decision isn't expected until next year. >> that last wrestlemania, 80,000 fans. how about the a's, what is it going on with them? >> we're closing in on the final month of the season. i think we're going to find out what they're made out of. got to find a way to keep this slump out of a full blown free fall. leaving the a's feeling like they should have won them all. oakland led in all three games
